Prerequisites for Monitoring Windows Servers using OpStor
OpStor provides monitoring and management of Windows servers in
a SAN environment.
Models Supported
- Windows 2000 servers (like Windows XP , Windows 2003 etc) &
Windows NT
Features Supported
OpStor provides information of the following components on the
Host Servers,
Storage resources
- SCSI / Fibre-channel Host Bus Adapter details
- Remote end storage device details
System Resources
- CPU usage
- Memory usage
- Disk usage & I/O statistics
- Ethernet link status
- Inventory details of server components such as Processor, Ethernet
card, CDROM drive, etc.
Prerequisites for Monitoring
- Starting the host server platform SNMP service
- Start the platform SNMP service if not already started.
- Check the SNMP service Security settings. This can be viewed
via Start -> Settings -> Control Panel ->
Administartive Tools -> Services -> SNMP Service
-> (Right-click) Properties -> Security (tab)
- OpStor uses "public" snmp comunity to talk
to Host Servers. Check if the snmp community name "public"
is available in the text-window under "Accepted
Comunity Names" with "READ-ONLY"
rights. If not then add that community.
- Check if the server running OpStor is allowed to access
this SNMP Service. To do this, check if the IP of the
server running OpStor is available in the "Accept
SNMP packets from these hosts" text-window. If
not, then add that IP address.
- If any modifications are made, then save them by selecting
"Apply" and restart the SNMP service.
This is required for these changes to take effect.
- HBA Discovery: If HBAs are present in the host server
, ensure that the HBA Agent is installed and running . Download
URL & installation instructions for each OS is available at
,
HBA Agent Download & Installation
- SCSI Discovery: In addition, if it is required to get
the list of SCSI adapters & attached SCSI devices in the server
(applicable for Windows 2000 based servers) , the MicoSoft utility
devcon.exe needs to be installed in the server where OpStor is
running.
- Go to the server where OpStor is installed.
- Download devcon.exe from Microsoft
site.
- Run <devcon_download_dir> devon.exe
- This opens up a dialog box asking to 'UnZip'
- Select 'UnZip' option and choose a directory <devcon_install_dir>
- This will create two dirs namely <devcon_install_dir>/I386
and <devcon_install_dir>/Ia64
- If your Windows machine is 32-bit Processor based, keep
<devcon_install_dir>/ I386 to PATH [set the PATH environment
variable]
- If your Windows machine is 64-bit Processor based, keep
<devcon_install_dir>/ Ia64 to PATH [set the PATH environment
variable]
- Delete <devcon_download_dir>/devcon.exe [This exe is
not required and should not be in the PATH]
- Restart OpStor (This is required for devcon to be included
in the PATH for OpStor)
- devon.exe detailed documentation is available online for reference
Steps to add the device for monitoring in the OpStor Browser client
- Start OpStor if it is not running already
- Connect to OpStor webclient
- Navigate to 'Admin tab' --> 'Manage Storage Devices' link in OpStor Webclient
- Specify the IP of the host server[If the host is already discovered before
HBA agent is started / devcon is installed , please delete the host server
before adding it as explained here]
- If the read community is other than "public" , choose 'SNMP' option and
specify it in the "community" field
- Click "Add Device"
